MODEST MOUNTAINEERING is possibly the most idiosyncratic mountaineering book you will ever read. It comprises 34 vignettes, mainly on mountaineering topics, but with excursions into expedition rationing, Christian belief and pithy quotations. Geographically the mountaineering episodes extend from the modest hills of Wales to Everest via the Arctic, two volcanoes, via ferratas and even a safari in Botswana.
MODEST MOUNTAINEERING does not set out to be an autobiography nor is it a tale of fearsome episodes on frozen North Faces. Rather it is a few recollections of someone who has enjoyed the mountains for the past 60 years in sun and snow, rain and wind and with many good companions to help him on his way. It is, perhaps, a book to be dipped into rather than read at one sitting like a thriller. Order from the author at j.muston@btinternet.com
